Tell Congress to say NO to additional sanctions on Nicaragua

Just one week after Nicaragua argued at the International Court of Justice to defend the Palestinian people from the genocide in Gaza, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs gave its approval to a bill to impose more sanctions on Nicaragua. We must stop it from being approved by the Senate!

Dear Senator,

Please vote NO on S.1881, which seeks to impose more sanctions on Nicaragua and will cause hardship among the most vulnerable Nicaraguan citizens—the
poor, children, the elderly, and the sick.

Nicaragua has the second lowest per capita GDP in the Americas, yet has made tremendous strides in reducing poverty and improving health indicators such as
malnutrition and maternal and child mortality since 2007. Development loans have enabled it to build 24 new hospitals, improve roads, and to bring electricity, clean water, and housing to underserved communities. The country provides free universal health care and education at all levels. We do not want to reverse these trends!

Existing sanctions already caused Nicaragua to lose over $1.5 billion in development loans. This new package would further restrict access to those loans, and codify broad sector sanctions on gold, beef, and coffee, jeopardizing hundreds of thousands of jobs.

It also forbids any private US investment in the country. This legislation will disrupt regional trade, cause hunger in countries that trade with Nicaragua, and fuel further emigration from the region.

For these reasons, I urge you to vote NO on S.1881/H.R.6954.

Sincerely,

Will you sign?

I am a Jewish-American activist for a free Palestine and board member of a historic US peace organization who also volunteered for 6 months teaching in rural Nicaragua. I am horrified beyond words to see that the US government would be threatening Nicaragua with sanctions for doing the right thing by standing in solidarity with Palestine as they are subjected to illegal military occupation, apartheid, and now genocide. The US has committed many atrocities against these two nations, from funding and arming Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinians for decades to training and arming US corporate-backed dictators and death squads in Nicaragua. As a Jewish person, as a USAmerican, as a peace activist, as someone who stands with the oppressed of the world, from Palestine to Nicaragua and beyond, I say NOT IN MY NAME. I am IMPLORING you to stand on the right side of history and vote NO on S.1881/H.R. 6954. Also, these should not be loans!!!! They should be direct reparations payments to each and every individual Nicaraguan, and we should do the same for Palestinians and every other population we have victimized through US colonialism, imperialism and militarism. The US OWES money to Nicaragua for all the damage it has caused that country, not the other way around!!!

    I am a dual US/Canadian citizen.

The timing of the approval of this bill comes very soon after Nicaragua argued it’s case at the International Court of Justice calling on Germany to stop exporting arms to Israel while Israel commits genocide in Gaza. These sanctions, if passed into law, will appear to punish Nicaragua fro standing up for people in Gaza who are being subjected to a genocide that the United States is complicit in.
